What it means to be a B Corp

As a B Corp, we are part of a global community of purpose-led businesses that believe people and the planet matter just as much as profit. It gives us a space to learn from each other, share ideas, and collaborate to create meaningful change. Read our Annual Impact Report here.

Our Material Impacts

We want to make sure we are focusing on the things that actually matter the most. So, as part of getting re-certified as a B Corp, we ran a thorough check on our environmental and social impacts. This means we can make better decisions and put our resources where they will do the most good. Read about our material impacts here.

Our commitment to Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion

This commitment has been approved by our Board and applies across everything we do – from how we work together as a team, to how we serve our customers, support our communities, and run our business.

We believe in a seat at the table for everyone.

Butternut Box is an equal opportunity employer. We believe that to make the best food for all pets, we need a team that represents all humans. We celebrate different nationalities, backgrounds, experiences and perspectives. We are specifically committed to increasing representation from underrepresented groups. We want a strong, diverse team built from different identities and lived experiences.

We’re not perfect, but we are dedicated to the ongoing work of building an inclusive, supportive place where you can do the best work of your career.

Sustainability FAQs

Yes. We're proud to be a certified B Corporation, meaning we've met B Lab’s rigorous standards for social and environmental performance, accountability and transparency. But becoming a certified B Corp isn't a one-off achievement.   We're regularly reassessed and continuously work to improve our impact. We recently re-certified as a B Corp in August 2025 improving our overall B Impact Assessment score by 17.7 points compared with our first certification. We’re now working towards certification under B Lab’s new standards, that raise the bar even further.  These updated standards require businesses to meet minimum performance requirements across seven core impact topics, with independent third-party verification and stronger alignment with emerging global regulations.

We monitor the environmental impact of our business across a range of areas, including:

  • Carbon emissions from our operations, purchased ingredients, packaging and deliveries

  • Water consumption

  • Waste generation and recycling

Tracking this data helps us understand where we can make the biggest improvements and reduce our overall environmental footprint.

We work towards reducing our environmental footprint  through our dedicated Planet pillar.

This includes tracking the carbon emissions from our own energy usage, as well as from our supply chain and deliveries, as well as how much water we use and what we do with our waste.

  • Gas efficiency: In 2025, we reduced Scope 1 greenhouse gas emissions intensity and gas consumption intensity by 17.5% per kilogram of food produced. This improvement was primarily driven by significant investments made in 2024 in energy-efficient manufacturing technologies, including heat recovery systems and high-efficiency steam ovens.

  • Renewable electricity: Although 100% of our purchased electricity is matched with Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs), we recognise that electricity supplied through the national grid continues to come from a mix of renewable and fossil fuel generation. To further reduce our environmental impact, we are investing in rooftop solar panels at Ace's Pantry, enabling us to generate renewable electricity on-site and reduce our reliance on grid-supplied power.

  • Waste reduction: All of our existing and new production sites in Poland operate as zero-waste-to-landfill facilities. We continue to focus on waste prevention and increasing resource recovery. By the end of 2025, 91% of our total waste was either recycled or converted into biogas, supporting our commitment to a circular approach to waste management.

Our boxes, toppers and leaflets are made from FSC-certified sources and are fully recyclable in your household recycling bin.  Our ice packs, as well as all the plastic in our treats and extras range, are made from LDPE soft plastic - the most widely recycled soft plastic. We advise checking with your local council if they can go in your home recycling. If not, you can pop them into a soft plastics recycling bin at your local supermarket.

To ensure food safety and durability, our pouches are made from a food-grade, BPA-free blend of Polyethylene (PE) and Polyamide (PA) designed to safely withstand extreme temperature shifts during cooking and freezing. Because these mixed materials cannot currently be separated for recycling, the pouches are not yet recyclable; however, we minimise manufacturing waste and our team is actively researching sustainable, recyclable alternatives that maintain the same high standards of quality and protection.

Our fresh meals are cooked gently right inside the pouch to lock in nutrients without needing artificial preservatives. While traditional tin cans are widely recyclable, metal cans can’t support our unique fresh-cooking and freezing process. Our current pouches use a food-grade, BPA-free blend of Polyethylene and Polyamide to handle extreme temperature changes safely. Because this mixed plastic isn't recyclable yet, we minimise manufacturing waste while our research and development team conducts ongoing tests for recyclable alternative materials.

Under our Product pillar, we prioritise ethical and safe sourcing. All pet food is cooked, packed, and frozen at our UK manufacturing kitchens using human-quality ingredients. Because agricultural supply chains carry inherent risks, we conduct scheduled due diligence on all suppliers, evaluating compliance against the UK Modern Slavery Act, the ETI Base Code, and Sedex standards. Over the long term, we aim to give preference to suppliers meeting wider sustainability standards, including BRC and Fairtrade.

We have a zero-tolerance approach to modern slavery and human trafficking. Before working with new suppliers, we carry out due diligence and assess compliance with relevant ethical standards. We also review suppliers regularly and continue to strengthen oversight across our supply chain.

Supporting our communities is an important part of our impact. To date, we've donated over 300,000 meals to dogs and cats in need and volunteered over 5,500 hours to our local charity partners. We’re always looking for ways to create positive social impact through partnerships, volunteering and community initiatives.

We publish our Annual Impact Report, which shares more detail on our environmental and social performance, progress and priorities. Is Butternut Box just "greenwashing," or can I verify your claims?

We believe in full transparency rather than vague sustainability claims. Being a certified B Corp means our environmental and ethical practices are independently audited by a third party. You don't have to take our word for it, you can read our full Annual Impact Report, B Corp Directory Listing, and public governance policies right on our website.
