It’s natural to want to know what happens before your dog’s food reaches their bowl. At Butternut Box, recipes are developed by qualified specialists, checked against independent nutritional standards and made in a kitchen that follows rigorous food-safety controls.

Who develops Butternut Box’s recipes?

Making food to human food standards is one part of the job. Knowing what a dog actually needs is another, and a dog’s nutritional requirements aren’t simply a scaled-down version of ours.

Dog food needs to be made for dogs, not simply adapted from human food. Our product team brings together experience in pet food, food science, chemistry, animal science and veterinary medicine.

Collectively, the team has more than 50 years of experience understanding what dogs need, including which nutrients they require and in what quantities, how ingredients behave when cooked, and where safe limits lie. That expertise is supported by veterinary and independent nutritional oversight:

Dr Ciara Clarke

Our in-house vet, Ciara supports with ingredient scoping and risk assessments, as well as advising on areas relating to dog health and wellbeing.

Charlotte McCormack

Our Product Development Director, Charlotte has a background in feed science, animal health and welfare, and nutrition, with extensive experience in pet food.

She signs off on every ingredient and final recipe, with responsibility for ensuring each one meets our standards for safety, quality and nutritional suitability.

Our lead nutritionist

A qualified veterinary surgeon, PhD and Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary and Comparative Nutrition (ECVCN), with extensive academic and research experience in animal nutrition.

Alongside his academic role at a university, he works with us to review and validate our nutritional formulation and monitoring, advises on complex areas of nutritional science and FEDIAF guidelines, and signs off new recipes.

We can't share his name because of his university role, but we can be fully transparent about the expertise and independent academic perspective he brings to our approach to nutrition.

What nutritional standards does Butternut Box follow?

Every Butternut recipe is complete and balanced, meaning it provides your dog with all the nutrients they need, in the right amounts, with nothing missing. We formulate our recipes to the standards set by FEDIAF, the European Pet Food Industry Federation, which are widely used across the UK and Europe

Before we cook anything, we calculate the recipe’s expected nutritional profile using our in-house formulation tool. It checks every nutrient against FEDIAF’s recommended minimum and maximum levels. The calculations draw on our lab results for ingredient nutrition, alongside published nutritional reference data used across the food industry.

How does Butternut Box assess ingredient safety?

Before an ingredient is approved, we consider its intended use, the highest realistic amount that could be present in a meal and the available scientific evidence. We check relevant approved lists and recognised safety limits, then require sign-off from our technical and veterinary specialists.

How is Butternut Box tested before it reaches my dog?

Each new recipe moves through a series of checks:

1. Trial batches are made in the development kitchen and then tested on the production line.

2. Ingredient and meal samples go to an independent UKAS-accredited laboratory.

3. The results are checked against the recipe specification and FEDIAF requirements.

4. Dogs in our team and Tastemaker community try the food at home, giving us feedback on palatability and tolerance.

5. A full production batch is sampled again to check consistency across the run.

6. The relevant kitchen and product-development leads review the results before approval.

Home feeding helps us understand how food works in real households. It cannot answer every scientific question, so we also use laboratory analysis and research where controlled measurements are needed.

Where is Butternut Box made and to what standard?

Our meals are prepared in a high-care kitchen operating to standards used in human-food manufacturing. Controls cover hygiene, temperature, raw and cooked separation, contamination prevention and batch traceability.

Our technical and kitchen teams include people with experience in high-care food production. The aim is simple: identify anything that does not meet the standard, hold it back and investigate before release.

How does Butternut Box control its supply chain?

We use suppliers from the human food supply chain. Approved suppliers must hold relevant food-safety certification recognised by the Global Food Safety Initiative, and deliveries are checked when they arrive.

We also assess samples, specifications, packaging, labelling and transport conditions. Every ingredient can be traced to its supplier, batch and delivery information.

How does Butternut Box check food safety during production?

The checks below summarise the main controls used across the process. If a check fails, the affected food is held while the cause is investigated.

Our quality team independently verifies critical checks, including temperature and metal detection. Food is held back to the last confirmed good check whenever there is any doubt.

How does Butternut Box monitor quality post-launch?

Quality monitoring continues after launch. We keep reference samples from production batches, review customer wellness information and record relevant veterinary nurse consultations. If a concern or unusual trend appears, our teams investigate it and use traceability records to follow the food back through its ingredients, supplier and production history.

Who checks that we’re doing all this?

Our own procedures are supported by external checks:

• Recipes are formulated against FEDIAF guidelines and tested by an independent UKAS-accredited laboratory.

• Suppliers hold food-safety certifications recognised by GFSI.

• Our kitchen holds BRCGS AA certification following an independent audit.

• External consultants, universities and vets review aspects of our recipes and nutritional approach.

• We operate within the UK regulatory framework, including DEFRA and Trading Standards requirements.
