We all know what Frenchies do best. Clowning about, making new friends and generally keeping everyone around them entertained. If there was a dog Olympics, well... they probably wouldn't be in it.

But what they lack in athletic prowess, they make up for with personality. You have to treat them like the individuals they are. And this goes for their diet, too. You have to take their breed into account when planning meals, as well as all the little quirks that make them who they are. Yes, even their farts.

Frenchies can fart a lot (no judgement). This is down to their sensitive digestive systems. But not all dog farts are created equal. Excessive farting can be a sign of an intolerance to some ingredients found in typical dog foods. Allergens can also affect their skin, causing those soft folds on your dog's face to become itchy and uncomfortable.

Based on our current customers, we estimate that adult French Bulldogs need around 512 calories per day. This can vary based on your pooch’s age, weight and activity level.

Do French Bulldogs Shed?

Yes, French Bulldogs shed.

However, due to their shiny, silky-soft coat, they are considered to be minimal shedders. This basically means that you’re unlikely to get covered in their hair when you pick them up for cuddle-o-clock, but you might find a few rogue strands on the sofa from time to time.

There are a few things you can do to minimise the effects of shedding from your French Bulldog:

• Feed your pooch a high-quality food rich in protein sources and veg

• Maintain a regular brushing schedule, every few days should do the trick

• Hoover regularly

• Train your pooch to stay off the furniture / stay out of certain rooms

• Make lint rollers your best friend

Do French Bulldogs Have Tails?

If we had a treat for every time we heard this one. Yes, French Bulldogs do have tails.

It is teeny, weeeeeny. But we promise it’s there. Their short tails are a natural characteristic of their breed and are not docked or cut off. They come in all different shapes, including corkscrew, straight but stumpy and thick root pointy tip.

Unfortunately, this tail type can come with its problems. Twisted tails can cause Hemivertebrae. This is basically a condition that can put pressure on the spinal cord and cause walking problems. Their short tails can also make them prone to things like sunburn and infection, as they do not have as much protection as other breeds would get from their longer tails.

These can all be monitored with help from your Vet, so don’t hesitate to voice your concerns.

Are French Bulldogs Good with Kids?

Frenchies are generally regarded as a laid back breed, not much phases them and that includes being around children. The PDSA advises that whilst they are suitable around children of all ages, you should remain close and supervise as they can be quite boisterous when they play.

It’s worth noting that children should be taught how to behave appropriately around dogs where possible. Even the most well-behaved dogs are unlikely to sit idly whilst their tails are pulled.

How Much are French Bulldogs?

According to research conducted by Pets4Homes UK as of 2022, the average cost of purchasing a French Bulldog is £1,708.

First and foremost, you should ensure that you’re buying your pup from a reputable breeder or rescue centre. This will ensure that your dog has been bred and cared for in the right circumstances. A sound woof of advice from us, if it seems too good to be true it’s likely that it is. A dog is a huge investment in time, money and love, so make sure that you take the time to do plenty of research before making any decisions.

As well as the cost to purchase a Frenchie, it is impawtent to be mindful of the other expenses involved when bringing a pooch into your life.

• Vaccines / flea and worming treatments (first dosage and boosters)

• Neutering / spaying (usually from 6 months onwards)

• Equipment (collar, harness, lead, bed, bowls, brushes, poo bags, toys)

• Food

• Insurance

• Daycare / boarding

Butternut Box is Perfect for Frenchies

You want to do your best for your furry friend, and we're here to (hopefully) make it easy for you. With French Bulldog food from Butternut Box, you don't need to think about portion size. We'll provide perfectly sized, nutritionally complete meals that contain everything your dog needs. No one understands your Frenchie quite like you do, so this is where we bow-wow down (sorry) to your knowledge. Use our Build Your Box tool to tell us all about your pup. We'll then create a delicious meal plan which is perfectly portioned just for them. Less time devoted to guesswork, more time for cuddles.

A high-quality food is the key to keeping your pup healthy. And you'll be glad to hear that all of our meals avoid nasties like preservatives and fillers. Our food is also freshly prepared and we only include ingredients that we would eat ourselves. All this goes towards making your dog's stomach happy. And keeping some of those deadly farts at bay.

Introducing new food to your Frenchie can be a delicate process. While they’ll likely chow down with enthusiasm, their sensitive tummies will need a little longer to get used to the idea. An immediate switch might cause digestive trouble like diarrhoea, and fussiness with their new food. So it pays to take things slowly, for their sake and yours.

To make this process simple, we include a handy transition guide with your first Butternut Box. It's designed to help you gradually introduce those drool-worthy new tastes and textures to your pup in a way that avoids tummy upsets. We'll let you know how to mix their old food with Butternut Box meals across a week or so until they've made the switch completely.

How Much Will it Cost to Feed My French Bulldog Butternut Box?

We estimate that it will cost around £56 each month to feed your French Bulldog a diet of Butternut Box food. This is based on data from our current customers and can vary depending on things like age, weight and activity level.

We generally recommend dividing this into two meals per day, morning and evening, to help sustain your pooch throughout the day.
