Springer Spaniels are among the most popular dog breeds in the UK, and it's easy to see why. Loving, playful and energetic, they make fantastic pets – especially if you like the idea of a four-legged companion who'll keep you fit. They're also cheery and even-tempered, which makes them a great choice for busy family homes.

With their long coats and distinctive markings, Springers know they're adorable and are more than able to turn on the charm. Giving them the right food will help to keep their fur glossy, as well as giving them the energy they need for a good game of fetch in the park.

It's high in protein

Springer Spaniels are gun dogs. They're bred to sniff out and flush game from the undergrowth, retrieving it once it's been shot. Non-workers have the same skills as their professional counterparts, so it's likely your Springer will show off their natural abilities by fearlessly following their noses and (politely) demanding games of fetch.

Plenty of protein is required for their high-energy lifestyle, and Butternut Box is pawsitively packed with it. The body uses protein to strengthen muscles and repair tissue – helping your pooch enjoy an active life.

If a Butternut meal is labelled 'chicken', you can rest assured that's the only type of animal protein it contains. Surprisingly, this isn't the case with all dog foods. Legally, for a 'with' claim, they have to contain only 4% of the meat mentioned on the label, with the rest coming from other sources. We don't think that's right, so we only use single-source meats and thoroughly clean our kitchens between recipes, to prevent cross-contamination.

It has the right amount of calories

Every dog is different, and the calories they need to stay healthy will depend on their breed as well as their lifestyle. Obesity is one of the biggest health issues facing British pets, but being underweight can be just as problematic. It's all about finding the healthy balance, and unfortunately, off-the-shelf dog foods tend to have a 'one size fits all' approach to portion sizes.

A high-voltage Springer might need more calories than less active dogs of the same size, so following pack instructions could leave your pet feeling peckish. Which could result in a spot of ferreting around in the bin or begging for scraps at the dinner table.

With Butternut Box, each pouch has exactly the amount of food your Springer needs to stay healthy. And we're not speaking in generic terms, either – each box is put together just for your pet. When you sign up with us, we ask you questions about your dog (including breed, age and activity level) so we know exactly how much to put in each pouch. No guesswork needed, just lots of science and a big calculator (well, a computer, actually). That way you know your Springer's always fully fuelled and ready for high-speed action.

It can help with allergy symptoms

Like a lot of pure-bred dogs, Springer Spaniels can be prone to allergies and food intolerances. This usually means itchy, sore skin or tummy troubles – sickness, diarrhoea and lots of foul farts. Butternut Box recipes were first created to tackle these symptoms in our co-founder Dave's rescue dog, Rudie. She was very poorly when she joined Dave's family, but gently cooked food made with freshly prepared ingredients gave her a new lease on life.

This is why Butternut Box doesn't contain any allergens that can trigger a troubled gut. Even if you haven't noticed any of these symptoms in your Springer, a more natural diet will keep their tails wagging. And knowing exactly what's going into each meal is a great way to keep a spring in their step – and in yours too.
